About the Class

Silambam, New Jersey seeks to inculcate an appreciation and understanding of our Indian artistic heritage in young artists, provide them with a comprehensive dance education in Bharatnatyam and create opportunities for them to develop and perform. The curriculum is grounded in rigorous fundamental training and physical discipline while weaving in age-appropriate refinement of abhinaya and an emphasis on individualistic self-expression. Through years of training, students will progress from learning basic adavus to complex compositions, culminating in their arrangetram. Post-arrangetram, students will learn nattuvangam technique, expand their dance repertoire, and participate in solo and group choreographies.

About the Guru

Guru Smt Sushma Iyengar is a disciple of Padmasri Sudharani Raghupathy and has been a dancer and performer for more than two decades. She was a long-time recipient of the Center for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India scholarship for dance and has performed in all the major cultural festivals in India.
